Plein Air | June 24-Aug 20, 2023

Red Wing Arts celebrates our 17th annual event in 2023, bringing artists to our community from around the region to paint “recognizable” Red Wing en Plein Air. Meaning approximately “open air” in French, Plein Air is a study of how light and shadow interact with things, creating a snapshot of one moment in time that can never be repeated.

Red Wing sits at the entrance to the Driftless Region. We are a stunning place with a charming downtown, dramatic bluffs, rolling hills, vistas and winding rivers that define our historic town.

In 2023, participating artists competed for $5,000 in cash prizes. Our exhibit includes over 100 works that were judged and hung in our Depot Gallery.

2023 Poet Artist Collaboration
April 14-June 18, 2023

Our 2023 Poet Artist Collaboration features 68 juried artists and poets participating in an art exhibit, poetry readings, and published chapbook featuring all artwork and poetry of the participants.

From the poems chosen, participating artists create a new piece of art inspired by one of the poems. The joy and challenge of this event is the translation of the emotion and story of the written words of a poet by an artist into a representative piece of art.

Material Geometry 3 | Featuring recent works by John Wells | April 6-9, 2023

“Material Geometry 3” is the continuation of a series of sculptures and paintings by John Wells focused primarily on color and material, exploring the spatial relationships of shapes, sizes and the relative positions of forms.

John prefers compositions that are geometric, rectilinear, frequently symmetrical and controlled. He work to minimize his compositions with forms that embrace regimentation while employing a wide variety of sculptural and paint materials, application techniques and finished surfaces.

CLOSE TO HOME

Nov 26-Jan 10, 2022 | @ The Depot Gallery

Featuring 52 paintings by Hannah C. Heyer & Andy Evansen

Hannah and Andy have lived in the rural Midwest their entire lives, giving them a unique appreciation of the simple beauty of a landscape that changes with the seasons in both drastic and subtle ways.  This exhibition was borne out of their desire to share their observations over the course of a year that found all of us closer to home than ever. The paintings document the seasonal shifts in southeastern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin, an area filled with rolling farmlands, bluffs along the Mississippi River covered in deciduous trees, and big skies. Each artist will exhibit 26 paintings, marking the transition from the cold blanket of winter to the melting of spring; the humid greens of summer to the first pops of autumn color; and the ways in which these seasons affect not only the landscape but the people who live here.
